A.R.T. Program Schedule Been Working as an Intern for Five (Six?) Years and You’re Still Not Registered? Get with the [ART] Program! The ART (Achieving Registration Together) Program is a series of both preparation courses for the Architectural Registration Exam and hands-on activities that emphasize the material on the exams. Some of these activities, which are free for ART Program participants, are potentially eligible for IDP (Intern Development Program) credit and are open to all Associates for a small fee at the door. Our AIA Affiliate members have been particularly generous in providing access to their job sites and expertise for these activities. To help demonstrate the principles of Lateral Forces, J. Vinton Schafer & Sons, Inc., Hope Furrer Associates, Inc. and the American Visionary Arts Museum hosted an absolutely outstanding seminar and tour of, among other things, the shoring and bracing used to temporarily stabilize the Whiskey Barrel Building during its major renovation. (And the museum graciously granted participants free access to the exhibits for the day!) Another highly beneficial activity was hosted in March for our Materials and Methods session by Belair Road Supply Co., Inc. This session involved building mock-ups of brick and block walls and installing flashing, weeps, a window opening, and other information under the supervision of experienced masons. There is a different activity almost every month. If you are currently completing your internship and would like to find out more about upcoming activities that could count towards IDP credit, contact John Padussis of Gensler at 410.230.3032 or Jen McLeran of GWWO, Inc. at 410.332.1009. If you’ve already completed the IDP and are in the process of taking the ARE, perhaps the ART Program can help you prepare! In addition to the prep courses and activities, there are study guides available for group study sessions at AIABaltimore. The overall schedule and fees for the upcoming ART Program sessions are as follows: 2004-2005 Calendar (cost per session for AIA Members/Non-AIA Members) July: Construction Documents - $30/60 A 10% discount is available if you register for five or more sessions. For additional information or If you would like to be on the ART Program committee, please contact: Associates Committee News, April 2004 Baltimore’s First Annual Architecture Week has been the focus of much activity in the Associates committee since the holidays. Based on similar happenings in New York, Washington, Glasgow, Toronto, and other cities, we plan to introduce our own event to bring architecture the attention it deserves in our city. Making its debut this October, Architecture Week will be a citywide event encompassing lectures, movies, exhibits, and gallery shows; its companion event, Open House Baltimore, will include walking tours and building tours of the city's best historic and modern landmarks. The week will culminate in AIA's Design Awards and Beaux-Arts Ball as a true celebration of architecture. Our chief goal is to increase public awareness of the importance of architecture and the built environment. Your help is needed, and your input is welcome! Please contact Anne Raines (araines@archplan.com) or Lawrence Kuper (Lawrence.kuper@johnammon.com) for more information on Architecture Week; contact Kevin Johnson (kjohnson@cbhassociates.com) for more on Design Awards. Associates are stepping up their participation in Rebuilding Together Baltimore this yearsponsoring a house of our own! Rebuilding Together Baltimore is a non-profit, volunteer organization that coordinates sponsors and volunteers to repair and renovate 60-70 homes of low-income elderly, disabled, and families with children, and completes community projects. Each year one city and one county neighborhood are selected. We need several people to take an active role as House Captains and Skills Captains, coordinating the needs of the homeowner, the skills of the volunteers, and the required materials. We also need volunteers of all skill levelsif you can use a paintbrush, you can help! Contact Susan McClure at smcclure@asg-architects.com. Another volunteer effort, a clothing drive in late March benefiting Dee’s House and the South Baltimore Homeless Shelter, was a great success! Thanks to all who donated goods, and special thanks to Adele Deaton for organizing the effort. Contact Adele at adeaton@cannondesign.com. Achieving Registration Together (ART) Program, featured last fall in AIA Architect This Week, continues to prepare architects-in-training to take the ARE. The ART program supplements the textbook material formerly covered in our ARE Prep Courses with hands-on events and tours to prepare individuals for the ARE at the rate of one exam per month. Group learning and study helps motivate everyone to take (and pass!) the exams. Field trips and hands-on exercises are typically held on Saturday mornings and are open to everyone, particularly anyone needing IDP hours; past tours included the B&O Museum and the Whiskey Barrel Building at the American Visionary Arts Museum. Contact Jen McLeran (jmcleran@gwwoinc.com) or John Padussis (john_padussis@gensler.com) for more information. Coming up in September, the AIA Gallery Show will focus on Baltimore architectsthen and nowwith a look at what our bosses were doing when they were students and interns. We can’t wait! Contact Jen Lyon (jenniferl@marks-thomas.com). Associate Socials are a great way to meet new people and get up-to-date on upcoming events. We went duckpin bowling for the March social, and for the April social we hope to get on the Jumbo-Tron at an Orioles game! Contact Adele Deaton at adeaton@cannondesign.com.
