BALTIMORE ARCHITECTURE WEEK

Anne Raines, AIA (Chairperson), Archplan, Inc.—Philipsen Architects, (410) 685-2002;
araines@archplan.com;

Coordinates annual Baltimore Architecture Week and its series of events.

2007 Excellence in Design Awards and Baltimore Architecture Week:
October 11-21

For many years, AIABaltimore, through its Design Awards Committee, has conducted an annual program to encourage and recognize design excellence among its membership, and to foster public appreciation of the architect’s role in shaping our communities. Throughout the summer, competing firms will prepare submission boards to be juried on Thursday, September 13 in Wilmington. The Call for Entries will be mailed in July. If you do not receive yours by August 1, please call 410.625.2585.

Our celebratory event will be held Friday evening, October 19 at the Stewart’s Building in Baltimore’s redeveloping Westside to again be followed by our 6th annual Beaux Arts Ball. Our 44th annual Excellence in Design Awards will once again be the climax of AIABaltimore’s annual Baltimore Architecture Week, currently charting the course for its fourth year. Last year’s stimulating series of events included a variety of lectures, tours, and artisan workshops. This year we hope to build on last year’s success with the cooperation of many of our previous partners and sponsors.

We are especially grateful to Design Collective, Inc. for being our corporate sponsor for 2007 Baltimore Architecture Week. The Urbanite and WYPR, 88.1 FM are our media partners. For more information on Architecture Week, or to volunteer, please contact Anne Raines, AIA, committee chair, 410.685.2002.

Thursday, October 4-Thursday, November 29

Solitary Woman in a Glass House: An Exhibition of Recent Work by Don Cook
First Thursday Opening Reception, October 4, 5-7 p.m.
FREE

AIABaltimore Gallery and Bookstore, 11 ½ W. Chase St. between Charles and Cathedral Sts., Mt. Vernon
Gallery open, Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. or by appointment.

Don Cook’s spare streetscapes and interiors have been described as “mysteries-in-waiting” – deceptively empty, enticing spaces which viewers populate with their own apprehensions, curiosity, and wonder. Central to this new exhibition are the artist’s “visual translations” of Emily Dickinson’s poetry – maquettes, drawings, and paintings of small houses and pavilions which, like the poems, are enigmatic, yet appear crisply Modern in their structure and economy.

The ornamental exterior of the 1887 brewhouse will be fully restored. Inside, the building will be fully renovated into office and community meeting spaces. The interior design will expose the industrial aesthetic of the building, including exposed building structure, steel tanks, and ornamental wood finishes.
