Our 2007 President Bill Gaudreau, Jr., AIA, was born in South Carolina when his parents were moving around in military service. He was reared in Stoneleigh in Baltimore County, attended Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Mt. Washington, and Calvert Hall High School. Contemplating becoming an architect as a child, Bill spent many Saturdays drawing at the office with his father. During high school, he took evening drafting and drawing classes at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Studying at the University of Notre Dame, Bill and his entire architecture class spent their junior year abroad in Rome where they had sessions at the Vatican, Coliseum, and other monuments. Bill was active with the national AIAS during his fifth year.

After graduating with a B.Arch. in 1978, Bill worked for several years in Philadelphia, first with Joe Jordan, the former dean at Drexel University, and then mostly with GBQC Architects where he was hired by Peter Piven, FAIA, the year after it was named the National AIA firm of the year. Bill returned to Baltimore and Gaudreau, Inc. in 1981. GBCQ had given Bill his initial exposure to the world of science and laboratory planning, which constitutes, on average, about 50% of the firm's work, in addition to a vibrant practice in education, athletics and general corporate work. Clients include the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Army at Ft. Detrick. Celebrating its 79th anniversary this year, Gaudreau, Inc. has a staff of 40. Bill became principal in 1990, and president in 2002. His brother, David, who is a Senior Vice-President, has served as AIAMaryland Treasurer and Director for several years. The firm recently hired Randy Gaskins, AIA, as a new Vice-President. Bill, Sr., remains Chairman.
During the late 1980s and early '90s, Bill served on the board of the Building Congress & Exchange, and was founding director of Christmas in April, now Rebuilding Together Baltimore. He remains active with numerous boards. Bill and his wife, Cathy, have three children all of whom are attending or have graduated from the University of Notre Dame, where both daughters played varsity lacrosse. Kristen, who holds a B.S. in accounting and a M.A., works in Chicago. Andrew received a degree in anthropology and teaches in France. Kelly is a sophomore studying biology.
Bill joined AIABaltimore president David Gleason AIA to create a renovation master plan, budget and fund-raise for the newly purchased AIABaltimore building in 1987, just before the economic recession. He has been a member of our board of directors since 1998, raising funds and directing the renovations on our building, and serving as secretary and treasurer.
With respect to the AIA, Bill has said "I am deeply committed to supporting the Institute, and am very proud of our chapter's enormous success over the past 15 years. We have benefited from great leadership, growing participation from members, and outstanding professional affiliate support."
