COTE (Committee on the Environment)
Initiated by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Green Building Program, the Maryland Green Building Network (MDGBN) is an ad-hoc assortment of building industry professionals -- architects, builders, contractors, developers, planners, landscape architects, manufacturers, real estate professionals -- as well as local and state government agencies, environmental organizations, planning consultants and other professionals and citizens who meet monthly to discuss and share information on innovative green building and sustainable design techniques and practices. Participants in the MDGBN are interested in helping the State promote and encourage the design and construction of buildings, and the development of sites, in a manner that encourages efficient use of natural resources and raw materials, protects the environment, promotes sustainable communities, and supports Governor Parris N. Glendenings Smart Growth and Neighborhood Conservation Initiative.
MDGBN provides interested professionals and citizens with opportunities to meet, share information and highlight successful green building/green development projects throughout Maryland. The MDGBN also assists DNR with identifying and implementing outreach and education opportunities to promote sustainable building and environmentally responsible development practices throughout the state. MDGBN meetings are held in conjunction with Baltimore AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) meetings and are open to the general public. These meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the offices of DNR in Annapolis or the Baltimore offices of the American Institute of Architects. Updates on the activities of the Maryland Green Building Program and the COTE take place from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m.; "Green Practice" and "Green Product" presentations immediately follow. Past presentations have included BIPVs (building integrated photovoltaics), permitting and building a strawbale house in Anne Arundel County, an update on the Port Towns in Prince Georges County, a demonstration of Green Building Advisor and GreenSpec from Environmental Building News, low impact development to protect watersheds, and sessions on several green building materials. Minutes from the initial few meetings can be found on the Maryland Green Building Program website http://www.dnr.state.md.us/programs/greenbuilding/mdgbn.
