8th Annual Baltimore’s Great Architecture Symposium

Enjoy a day-long symposium on Andrea Palladio organized by Homewood Museum and the Sheridan Libraries at The Johns Hopkins University. Authoritative speakers from around the world will address a wide variety of topics. Spring Technical Seminars

Each spring AIABaltimore offers several technical seminars on a variety of topics. This year, two Professional Affiliate members and one government agency will present seminars for a total of 3 AIA/CES (HSW) credits. Refreshments will be provided. Members/$10, Public/$25. Seminar 1: 4 5 p.m.
The Use of Stile and Rail Construction and Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) in Door Design A detailed overview of the stile and rail door construction method, its history of use in the United States and its important role in door design. The course will also provide a detailed understanding of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), its characteristics and use for stile and rail door applications.
Presented by Josh Peizer AIA/CES Facilitator TruStile Doors. Josh has been trained to and actively presents AIA/CES courses for products ranging from doors and windows, to columns, stair parts and fire-rated door systems.

Introducing COMcheck and REScheck A presentation on the Energy Code Compliance Software package: COMcheck and REScheck. Proof of Energy code compliance is required by IBC to obtain residential and commercial building permits (additions and new construction).
Presented by Ronald Majette, Project Lead, Commercial Energy Efficiency Codes, Architect Office of Building Technologies, U.S. Department of Energy. 1 AIA/CES (HSW) credit.
Seminar 3: 6 7 p.m.
A Systems Approach to Tile and Stone Ceramic and stone tiles are beautiful and durable surface coverings, but they require a system of components in order to produce a permanently functional finished product. Examine modular screeds and discuss the major implications they will have for living spaces worldwide. Review the history behind the uncoupling principle and its relevance to today's building environment. Discuss the placement of movement joints; why they are needed and how to apply them. Analyze the principle causes of failure for exterior systems, and discuss multiple solutions for creating assemblies that will stand the test of time. Areas of discussion will also include; floor drains that are specifically designed to be used in conjunction with bonded water proof membranes, complying with ANSI A118.10, floor transitions, finishing and edge protection for walls and countertops. 1 AIA/CES (HSW) credit
