September 2000: A Primer on Green Technology and Sustainable Building Issues
Join us Tuesday, September 12 in the AIABaltimore gallery at 6 pm for a primer on green design and sustainable building issues. Sponsored by the Committee on the Environment (COTE) and the Continuing Education Committee, this special event will provide a valuable introduction to the major aspects of this specialized design area. The reception begins at 5:30.
Have you noticed your clients' growing awareness of environmentally-responsible design and construction? Want to know more about how to integrate this approach into your practice without creating more problems than you solve? The September CES program is designed as a Primer on Green Technology and Sustainable Building Issues. Its aim is to educate today's design professionals -- architects, engineers, and contractors -- about the process and content of green design. The following basic information about the design of High-performance Green Buildings will be discussed:
A SIMPLIFIED DEFINITION OF GREEN TECHNOLOGY:
. . .The intelligent integration of technology with nature
FOUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF GREEN BUILDING DESIGN:
1. ENERGY: utilize appropriate technology to significantly reduce energy consumption and operational costs.
2. MATERIALS & RESOURCES: minimize the use of non-renewable resources and maximize the incorporation of sustainable materials throughout the project.
3. AIR QUALITY: minimize negative impacts on interior air quality (IAQ).
4. HEALTH: improve the health, motivation and productivity of building users through the creation of improved, highly-flexible environments.
DESIGN PROCESS: . . . A new paradigm of systems integration.
This presentation will also introduce the US Green Building Councils LEED Reference Guide, which is the nations first tool and guide for evaluating green buildings.
The presenters are John Boecker, AIA, and Marcus Sheffer, P.E., who have worked together on a number of high-performance buildings in Pennsylvania. Space is limited. Reservations will be confirmed upon receipt of payment by AIABaltimore. Admission is $5 for students, $10 for members, and $20 for non-members. This event is generously sponsored by Bettinger West Interiors, Inc.
