Continuing Education Special Program, September 16, 2003

Healthcare & Architecture 2003 and Future

Join AIABaltimore for a special program on Healthcare and Architecture Tuesday, September 16 to tour the new Weinberg Facility at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) on Lombard Street. Tom Herring, Senior Director of Construction & Engineering, and Deborah Smith, RA, Director of Planning for the Weinberg Building, will discuss the planning, design, and construction of a major urban healthcare facility in today's market. This will be followed by a tour.

A major accomplishment of this almost-completed, state-of -the-art healthcare facility will bring together Diagnostic, Therapeutic, Critical Care Programs, and Tertiary care as well as create future flexibility for services and changing healthcare technology. This $218 million program provides an additional 400,000 sf of space, creating an on outstanding environment for patient care. The primary objectives for the project include centralizing the Medical Center's emergency and modernizing perioperative services.

In 1992, Herring began working for the UMMC. It is the nation's oldest teaching hospital and is now a private, academic healthcare corporation effectively competing in a dynamic managed care market. As director of operations, he is responsible for engineering services for the main 1.7 million sf inpatient medical center, two 250,000 sf specialty hospitals, and more than 250,000 sf of primary care satellite facilities. Herring is also the project director for construction of the UMMC Weinberg Building.

The event begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Tickets will be $15 for AIA members, $10 for associates and students with ID, and $25 for all others. 1.5 AIA/CES(HSW) credits with registration.
