SAVE THE DATE for the AIABaltimore Annual Meeting
Tuesday, November 12, 2002

The AIA Baltimore Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 12 at Bond Street Wharf, the new home of RTKL’s Baltimore offices. It is the first opportunity for most members to see the inside of the new 220,000-square foot, RTKL-designed office complex in historic Fells Point.

RTKL

The program will start at 5:30 pm with the Annual Business Meeting followed by a reception and tour of the RTKL offices. Raymond Peloquin, AIA, vice president in charge of the project, and Dianne Black, AIA, vice president and office director, will talk about the unique opportunities of designing a new structure with the appearance of a 100-year-old warehouse, the challenges of relocating more than 200 employees from the Deutsch Banc Alex. Brown tower, and the firm’s commitment to observing principles of sustainable design and smart growth throughout the site selection and design process. Members of the project team will lead tours of the firm’s new office space.

The building is the centerpiece the Fells Landing redevelopment project, a $101-million complex of offices, shops and apartments on six acres along the waterfront under joint development by Struever Bros., Eccles & Rouse and H&S Properties Development Corp. RTKL was responsible for the architecture, environmental graphics, structural and MEP, as well as the telecommunications design.

Incorporating advanced technology – in keeping with its new neighbors around the “Digital Harbor” – Bond Street Wharf is also a building that exhibits a keen awareness of its context, which is an 18th century, waterfront warehouse setting. Its state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure features a raised floor system, under-floor air distribution cabling, and 10-foot ceilings for a maximum amount of flexibility, while the exterior draws on characteristic materials like brick and corrugated metal to keep the maritime architectural traditions of the harbor alive.

The building’s way-finding system, designed by ID8, RTKL’s environmental graphics group, pays homage to the history of the area with signage painted on the side of the red brick façade. In addition to Class A office space, the six-story structure incorporates retail space on the ground floor, a waterfront promenade, a public plaza, and a rooftop terrace offering dramatic views of the Baltimore harbor and skyline.

Bond Street Wharf is located at 901 Bond Street at Thames and Bond Streets. A new 760-car parking structure across Thames on Caroline Street supports the Fells Landing complex. Admission to the Annual Meeting is $15 for AIA Members, $10 for AIA Associates and students, and $25 for non members. 2 AIA/CES credits with registration. Please make checks payable to AIA Baltimore.
