"High-level craftsmanship and careful packing of the walls allow the artwork to reside in a very narrow band of space while creating flexibility in full display. This rigid container is made to expand to a great deal more surface area with a variety of display methods."

Project Narrative

This project involves the conversion of a school bus into a mobile gallery and classroom that literally brings art to the children it is intended to serve. The design carries the kinetic spirit of its mobility into the display and teaching functions it performs. Movable panels, layered display walls, a retractable computer shelf, and a hinged projection screen allow this roving gallery to be transformed as need demands. Storage compartments for teaching supplies and sculptures occupy the spaces beneath display platforms and around wheel enclosures. A lift for the disabled is hidden behind a moving display wall, while a pivoting panel closes off the drivers seat when stationary and the gallery space when moving. A custom built track system with evenly spaced holes and matching straps allow varying size pieces to be firmly attached without impacting the display walls. The end result is a design that is expressive of its transience while solving the functional demands of a very unique set of needs.
