Mediterranean Landscapes

MEDITERRANEAN TOWNSCAPES: Expressions in form, color and space by Robert Tennenbaum, AIA, AICP

Join AIABaltimore as we welcome local artist Robert Tennenbaum, AIA to the Architects Bookstore and Gallery on Thursday, February 5, 2004, from 5 – 7 p.m.

Architect and painter Robert Tennenbaum will be presenting his watercolor series, Mediterranean Townscapes, his most recent body of work that includes architectural representations from France, Spain, Italy and Israel. “Like most architects, I am fascinated by the ancient towns that surround the Mediterranean Sea.”

During the course of his 40 year career, Tennenbaum has participated in the urban design and planning of several towns and city centers. Simultaneously, he explored the relationship between art and architecture through his work in painting, either through oil paints or watercolor. He credits his profession as one of his primary sources of motivation.

“As an architect, scenes that grab me tend to have strong color, texture, contrast, interesting forms, patterns or rhythms, and abstract relationships. As an artist I can intensify those attributes of the scene and create a new reality.”

His work has been exhibited at such prominent galleries as the Baltimore Museum of Art, Columbia Art Center, Hoffberger Gallery, Howard Community College Art Gallery and the Montpelier Cultural Arts Center, and has been published in American Artist and Watercolor, as well as dozens of book and CD covers and event posters. Tennenbaum was born in Vienna, Austria, but grew up in New York City, where he earned a degree in architecture from Pratt Institute. He furthered his education at Yale University with a Masters degree in city planning, and now lives and works in Columbia, Maryland.

The exhibit will run from January 8 to February 25. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday or by appointment.
