Gallery Exhibit Committee

1st Thursday Opening

Join AIABaltimore Thursday, March 7 from 5 – 7 pm as we welcome Patrick McEvoy in the AIA Bookstore and Yanel E. De Angel and Alexander Fernandez in the Gallery.

Patrick McEvoy, a self-employed sculptor from Baltimore, has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from James Madison University. Most of his sculptures are bronze. They range from small indoor pieces to large outdoor fountains. McEvoy has been commissioned to create and install fountains in Baltimore, and as far away as California.

His work deals with "Form" inspired by music. Sculptures are preconceived but as the pieces are created, he improvises, like a jazz musician. Although there is no specific statement intended with his art, McEvoy’s hope is that the viewer can look at one of his works and come up with an idea or feeling of his or her own.

Husband and wife team, Yanel E. De Angel and Alexander Fernandez, will feature “architecture recorded,” a collection of drawings and sketchbooks, 1992-2002.

De Angel received a bachelor of environmental design from the School of Architecture at the University of Puerto Rico and a master of architecture at Syracuse University. She has served as a teaching assistant for several courses at University of Puerto Rico and Syracuse University’s Florence Center, where she later taught as an Assistant Professor.

De Angel’s graduate thesis, “Sacred and Profane: Public Spaces, the Patio Ritual and Market of Siena, Italy,” was awarded the James Britton Award for Best Thesis Project in 1999. She also received an award for the highest GPA and the Award for Excellence in Research at the Graduate Level. Her thesis was published by the School of Architecture and by Dialogue: Architecture, Design and Culture, a Taiwanese magazine. De Angel has traveled extensively in Italy, Greece, France, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal, particularly studying historic and modern architecture through analytical drawings. She has worked for architectural and historic preservation architects and has worked for the Carmassi Studio in Florence. Her current research focuses on the graphic documentation and analysis of an urban ritual in Florence, called il Scoppio del Carro a Firenze.

After receiving a bachelor of architecture degree at Syracuse University, Alexander Fernández taught at several architectural programs in Puerto Rico. In 1996, he received a grant from the U.S. Park Service and the Puerto Rico State Historic Preservation Office to research, document, draw and nominate four historically-significant buildings to the National Register of Historic Places in Washington D.C. He was awarded a full fellowship to pursue a Master in Architecture II at Syracuse University’s program in Florence, Italy. Fernández then taught design and theory courses at the Pre-Architecture program in Florence and was appointed assistant professor while teaching 1st, 2nd and 4th year design and various drawing courses in both Syracuse and Florence. Fernández directed and co-taught a traveling program in Spain and Portugal, which focused on the analysis of traditional and significant contemporary architectural work through on-site drawings in different media and techniques.

His formal research and analytical drawings of a Carthusian monastery near Pisa has been published in several Italian journals and the Journal of Architectural Education in the U.S. He lectured on drawing, his research, and for design reviews at several architectural programs in Florence, Puerto Rico and Maryland.

Both de Angel and Fernández currently work as designers at Ayers/Saint/Gross, Inc.

The Architects Bookstore and gallery are open Monday through Thursday, 9 – 4:30 pm.
