“In an old house there is always listening, and more is heard than is spoken.
And what is spoken remains in the room, waiting for the future to hear it.
And whatever happens began in the past, and presses hard on the future.
The agony in the curtained bedroom, whether of birth or of dying,
Gathers in to itself all the voices of the past, and projects them into the future.”
From The Family Reunion T.S. Eliot
Painter Sherry Zvares Sanabria, in an application of architectural design and carefully-angled light, creates images of once populated, now long-abandoned buildings. In a stunning exhibit opening at the AIABaltimore Gallery on May 6, she investigates the relationship between architectural interiors and the spirits of those who once inhabited them. Using an alliance of shadow and light, the paintings create an ethereal reference to the once-hosted events of the past and the slow deterioration that comes to the space with the future. As described by the artist, “I’m intrigued by the exceptional presence of light and what it can do to a painting. It can be sudden and confronting or mysteriously diffused, and I find it magical.” To contrast this, she uses the architectural stillness to create a timelessness.
Born in Washington D.C., Ms. Sanabria has spent the greater part of her career creating radiant paintings of spaces and locales where people have experienced profound moments in their lives, places that seem to hold the spirits of those who inhabited them. Throughout the course of her professional life, she has held 19 solo exhibitions and participated in over 40 group shows. Her work is included in the permanent collections of museums and other public spaces, as well as private collections throughout the United States and Europe.
The public hours for the Architects Bookstore and Gallery are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. 4:30 p.m. and by special appointment. If you are interested in exhibiting work, please contact Emily Arnold at earnold@aiabalt.com, or 410.625.2585.
