Exhibition Strange Attractions: Paintings by Judy Townsend

Opening Reception: Thursday, October 7, 5-7 p.m.

On view at AIABaltimore Gallery October 7 – November 25

Painter Judith Townsend, through the use of wildly organic curvatures juxtaposed with sharp, architectural formations, explores the universal relationship between order and chaos. In Strange Attractions, a striking exhibit opening at the AIABaltimore Gallery on October 7, she addresses her lifelong fascination with science and spirituality and the dramatic tension that exists therein. Inspired by the conflict between stasis and movement, Townsend paints with delicate resolve, creating grids of uniformity contrasted against seemingly random, evolving structures that carry the viewer through the painting.

As stated by the artist, “A grid can serve as an obstacle to perception or a window through which reality is revealed. There are layers of meaning to be found in every search for truth, some things are obscured from our understanding, some meanings change and deepen with knowledge.”

The paintings of Judith Townsend have been displayed in several solo exhibitions and countless juried shows. Her work appears in the permanent collection of the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression and the University of Virginia Law Library, as well as several private collections. She has been honored with the Award of Excellence at the CVWG Members’ Show and First in Show at Artscape, University of Virginia. She now resides in Virginia.

Also on exhibit, Autumn Watercolors by Baltimore watercolor artist Martha Dougherty on display in the Architects Bookstore through November.

This show exhibits still life paintings of organic forms as well as window views of Baltimore’s urbanscape. The site-specific painter of Baltimore scenes is currently sole proprieter of MdoughertyDesign, a greeting card and art print manufacturer – making watercolors accessible to the public at large.
