The U.S. Customs House

This unique building is seldom viewed on the interior by anyone other than those who work there. Please join us for this rare opportunity to see how monumental Federal architecture can be both preserved and adapted to modern office use. We will hear a presentation by Jim Pettit, AIA (Penza Associates Architects), Bob Vogelsang (D’Aleo Associates), Hayles and Howe (plaster restoration) and Matthew Mosca (paint analysis) describing the history of the building, and some of the challenges and solutions to its magnificent restoration and renovation.

Mentoring Opportunity

As part of its mission to promote the profession of architecture and historic preservation, the AIABaltimore Historic Resources Committee (HRC) is organizing a mentoring/shadowing program for college students pursuing an architectural career in historic preservation. AIABaltimore member firms are encouraged to participate in the program by offering opportunities for college students to visit ongoing historic restoration and/or adaptive re-use construction projects during the regular course of the Project Architect’s site visits. Other opportunities might involve participation by the student in field measurements, archival research, or a design charrette.

The HRC will establish a roster of member firms that are available for the program. It will be up to the individual firms to notify the HRC when a specific mentoring/shadowing opportunity occurs. When notified by a firm of an opportunity, the HRC will post the opportunity to the students who have expressed an interest in the program and make the connection between architect and student. The program begins now.

Interested firms should contact John Brunnett, AIA by e-mail at info@ghb-architects.com. Be sure to include in the subject line of your e-mail the following: “AIA-HRC”

To be on our email list, send your email address to: ranon@page-turnbull.com
Meetings: 3rd Tuesdays, 4:30 p.m. at AIABaltimore
