2005 AIABALTIMORE SPRING LECTURE SERIES
In addition to our other extensive monthly programming, for decades AIA has sponsored the only local annual lecture series devoted to architecture and design. This program brings guest speakers from around the world, as a gift to the people of central Maryland, and has attracted hundreds of enthusiasts, sometimes standing-room only crowds, and is open to the public.
TIME: 6 p.m. with reception to follow each lecture

Paul Lewis, AIA is a principal of Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis (LTL), an architecture and research partnership founded in 1993 which is dedicated to exploring the inventive possibilities of architecture through a close examination of the conventional and the overlooked. Their work includes large-scale building projects, theoretical projects, museum installations, exhibition design, full-scale prototyping, lectures and teaching. Mr. Lewis is the director of Graduate Studies in the Masters of Architecture program at Princeton University. In 2000, LTL was named one of 10 Selected Architects representing “The New Vanguard” by Architectural Record.

Roberta Brandes Gratz

Roberta Gratz is an urban critic, journalist, consultant, and author of The Living City: Thinking Small in a Big Way and Cities Back from the Edge: New Life for Downtown. She travels extensively throughout the United States and Europe to consult on urban revitalization issues. By illustrating the advantages of low-cost, modest initiatives, Ms. Gratz demonstrates that rebuilding authentic places, reconnecting communities and stimulating innovative change are within everyone’s reach. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, and the Surdna Foundation.
Roberta Brandes Gratz will present the Michael F. Trostel, FAIA memorial lecture in historic preservation supported by Preservation Maryland.

Shannon Nichol

Shannon Nichol is a founding partner of Gustafson Guthrie Nichol, a full-service landscape architecture firm in Seattle with special experience in designing high-use landscapes in complex, urban contexts. On rooftops, over freeways, between buildings, or suspended in the air, and in substantial collaboration with other disciplines, their unusual landscapes are designed as sensuous, connected settings for diverse and ever-changing activities. Ms. Nichol designs contextually-driven, complex or unorthodox award-winning landscapes in cities throughout North America. She is known for her inspired responses to local history, views, and urban topography.

Antoine Predock FAIA

Founder of Antoine Predock Architect PC in Albuquerque, NM in 1967, Antoine Predock, FAIA is also a registered landscape architect and interior designer. The firm specializes in museums, galleries, libraries, theaters and auditoriums, as well as residential and office projects. Recipient of more than 50 national and international awards, including the prestigious Rome Prize Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome, Mr. Predock lectures extensively. In 1981, he was named Kea Distinguished Professor at the University of Maryland, and since then, has taught as a distinguished professor and critic at numerous universities.
