David Harvey: Possible Urban Worlds

Ziger/Snead: Brown Center, Exterior View of Atrium

David Harvey, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology in the graduate center’s doctoral program at the City University of New York, is recognized internationally as one of the leading senior theorists in the field of urban studies. His writing on space and place has impacted the humanities and social sciences, through his interdisciplinary approach to urban planning issues. Harvey will address how global, capital, intellectual, social, and political layers of meaning influence the landscape around us.

Wednesday, November 10, 7 p.m.
Willie Doherty: The Impact of Politics on the Landscape

Photographer Willie Doherty’s work addresses the impact that fear, safety, and danger in public places has had on the people of Ireland, who have been saturated by both images and experiences of violence. Born and raised in Derry, Northern Ireland, where he lives and works, Doherty often uses its language and tools through the production of photographs, video, and audiovisual installations to accurately portray his homeland – offering a critical response to the sort of distorted documentation often provided in media coverage.

Wednesday, December 8, 7 p.m.
Krzystof Wodiczo

Krzystof Wodiczko, professor of visual arts in Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s department of architecture, is known internationally for his political and public art sculptures created through large-scale slide and video projections on architectural facades and monuments. His provocative and ephemeral installations, as well as his series of portable vehicles and instruments for the homeless, offer a critique of those in power and a call for social discourse and change.
