AIABaltimore Design/Build Competition to benefit the Maryland Food Bank Saturday, May 17 Thousands of canned food items to feed the hungry will be used to create colossal structures created by some of Baltimore’s top architecture and engineering firms on May 17, 6 a.m. 3 p.m. Participants include teams from: Ayers/Saint/Gross, Inc., CSD, Curry Architects, KCI Technologies, Inc., Marks, Thomas Architects, RTKL Associates, Inc., and Washington Group Judging will begin at 3:30 p.m. with a reception and gala to follow at 5 p.m. The structures will be on display at Harborplace and The Gallery, May 17 26, Monday Saturday, 9 a.m. 5 p.m. Come witness Baltimore architects and engineers apply their design and construction genius to aid in the cause to fight hunger. Bring at least one can of food to gain admission then cast a vote for your favorite structure. All food will be donated to the Maryland Food Bank. What Can Contractors Teach Architects? “Plenty” respond our friends at the Associated Builders & Contractors who have invited AIABaltimore to help design a special educational program in which our architectural firm members and professional affiliate contractors could participate. We will meet at a Leadership Breakfast on Thursday, June 12 to plan a pilot program. Join us for coffee at 8:15 a.m. and our discussion begins promptly at 8:30, to finish by 10. Affiliates in Action (AiA) Graham Landscape Architecture received an honor award for residential design form The Maryland/Potomac Chapter of ASLA the for its Wye Hall Project. Hayles and Howe, Inc. recently supplied the plaster Jacobean strapwork ceiling for the new Juicy Couture store in Washington, DC. The DC store is among many worldwide, in which Hayles and Howe has designed, supplied or installed one of several strapwork ceilings. Juicy Couture is a division of Liz Claiborne. Diana Hugue of Koffel Associates, Inc. has successfully passed the professional engineering examination and is now a registered Fire Protection Engineer. Thomas Moore Studios has begun the design development phase of an historically-inspired restoration of the decorative painting at St. George's Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The vestry of this 1849 Romanesque-Revival church has plans to restore much of the ornate decorative painting and gilding that once graced the chancel/apse and nave, but which has been covered with plain paint for many years. Thomas Moore Studios will perform motif research using archival photographs and other historically appropriate antecedents to develop the design scheme. AIABALTIMORE WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS: K.C.
