Annual “Affiliates in Action” Program presents:

New York/New Visions: Speaking with One Voice

Join AIABaltimore Wednesday, October 15 for our annual Affiliates in Action program New York/New Visions. New York/New Visions is a pro bono coalition of 21 architecture, planning and design organizations in New York that came together after September 11. Three of the principal leaders will discuss how this group of design professionals and civic leaders have influenced the rebuilding of the Word Trade Center (WTC) site. They are Frederic Bell, FAIA, executive director of AIA New York; Mark Ginsberg, AIA, president-elect of AIA New York, a member of the New York/New Visions executive committee, and a partner in Curtis + Ginsberg Architects; and Mark Strauss, AIA, vice president of AIA New York, chair of New York/New Visions Long Term Planning, and a principal with Fox & Fowle Architects.

The coalition presented possible solutions to the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and Port Authority (LMDC), as well as elected officials and civic activists, with the result that several key recommendations were incorporated into the LMDC blueprint. New York/New Visions has shown that bringing together representatives of different groups with different objectives can lead to greater consensus.

New York/New Visions is a unique opportunity for a look at the redevelopment of the WTC site from behind-the-scenes and an example of how design professionals can work together to get a seat at the table (they got two!). Also of interest to the Baltimore design community is the lesson learned from including design issues and public safety as part of the public dialogue in the city, including changes in the New York City building code and the use of high-performance buildings guidelines.

The event begins with a reception at 5:30 followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. It will be held at the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center, Morgan State University, 1700 East Cold Spring Lane. Designed by AIABaltimore firm member Gaudreau, Inc., the Murphy Fine Arts Center opened in December 2001. It is Baltimore's most modern venue replete with contemporary, state-of-the-art facilities for the performing and visual arts. For directions, go to www.morgan.edu/students/prospective/direct.asp. Plenty of free parking is available in the “Y” parking lot at the rear corner of the Arts Center.

Tickets may be purchased in blocks of ten by AIA members at a cost of $200 – a savings of $50 off the regular member ticket price. Individual tickets are $25 for AIA members, $15 for AIA Associates and students with I.D., and $35 for all others. Space is limited. To reserve a block of tickets, contact AIABaltimore at 410.625.2585 or send a check, made payable, to AIABaltimore. Tickets will be mailed upon receipt of payment. 1.5 AIA/CES credits with registration.
