Residential Design Awards Jury for 2004

This year’s jury includes Mahendra Parekh, AIA of Morgan State University, Institute of Architecture and Planning; Debra Phillips, AIA of Hord Coplan Macht, Inc.; and Alan Reed, AIA of GWWO, Inc./Architects.

Mahendra Parekh, AIA has been teaching at the Insitute of Architecture and Planning at Morgan State University since 1981. He received his B.Arch in Bombay, India and then studied City and Regional Planning at Clemson University. After licensure, he opened his own practice and has completed many award-winning projects, including the Great Blacks in Wax Museum. Mahendra has been a member of the AIA since 1980, serving on the board of directors since 2002, this year as treasurer. He has also participated in such local organizations as the Baltimore Architecture Foundation, the Neighborhood Design Center and, as an AIABaltimore representative, on the Civic Design Commission. He continues to work to build a strong AIAS at Morgan, and to create greater ties between the University and the work of AIABaltimore.

Debra Phillips, AIA has spent the majority of her career in health care planning and design. She earned her Bachelor of Environmental Design from Miami University of Ohio, and her M.Arch. from Texas A & M University. She was recruited to Baltimore by RTKL to join their Healthcare Studio. In 2001, Debra joined Hord Coplan Macht, Inc. (HCM) to bolster their existing health care presence. She was recently promoted to Vice President and looks forward to promoting and expanding HCM’s healthcare credentials. Debra has been an active AIA member since her arrival in Baltimore in 1985. She began working with the chapter as chair of the Residential Design Awards Committee, spending five years on the committee. In the early 1990s, she co-chaired the Spring Lecture Series Committee for several years. In 1995, Debra was elected to the board of directors, and became president in 2000.

Alan Reed, AIA is the Design Principal at GWWO, Inc./Architects. The firm specializes in providing services for cultural-educational facilities, with an emphasis on quality design that is both inspirational and evocative. As Design Principal, Alan works closely with client representatives to understand their unique needs and to create designs that are responsive in both form and function. His work has been featured by Architectural Record, Landscape Architecture and Buildings Magazine and has received awards at the national, regional and local levels. An active member of the AIA, Mr. Reed has served as President, Treasurer, Communications Committee Chair and Lecture Series Co-Chair for the Baltimore Chapter. He is also a member of the American Association of Museums and the US Green Building Council, and is a LEED Accredited Professional.
