2005 BALTIMORE Magazine/AIABALTIMORE Residential Design Award Winners and Jury Comments

HARGRAVE RESIDENCE
Ken Hargrave
Glen Echo, Maryland
Robert M. Gurney, FAIA

Jury Comments: “The level of detail in this design is impressive. The incredibly dramatic and revealing open collection of common rooms is also open to the site. This dynamic building offers an interesting and anticipatory approach. Its exuberant butterfly roof forms embrace the site, while the great room crawls down the hillside with its expansive view.”

Hargrave Residence: Robert M. Gurney, FAIA

KESSLER RESIDENCE
Lewis and Tamara Kessler
Chevy Chase, Maryland
Robert M. Gurney, FAIA

Jury Comments: “This bold and contradictory project has a stark, yet warm, character. This modern interpretation of the traditional home, rearranging spare and simplified features, is an incredible achievement. The gable roof form holds the street edge, while the rear opens to the garden. The beautiful interior is light, airy, and well-detailed. Accessibility is handled with successful invisibility.”

RANDECKER HOUSE
Lorraine and Victor Randecker
Vienna, Virginia
McInturff Architects

Jury Comments: “Unique and inventive, this house evokes clarity although it has a playful nature. The coloring and warm hues give it a real richness. The uncharacteristic use of commercial materials in a residential environment is handled well. Rich materials are used in the right places.”

Randecker House: McInturff Architects

STRAUSS RESIDENCE
Baltimore, Maryland
Swanston + Associates

Jury Comments: “The great space of the dining room organizes the entire house. The strong, tall, vertical element takes one out of a rowhouse, while the narrowness of the light well plan creates a new ‘hearth.’ Everything is linked by its organizational role. The quality detail is well-executed.”

Strauss Residence: Swanston + Associates

URBAN DWELLING 21
Baltimore, Maryland
Swanston + Associates

Jury Comments: “This spare, humble exterior opens to reveal a dignified, orderly, and striking interior. The double height living room acts as a powerful organizing element for the common and private spaces, while it orients one to the interior garden. The small entry foyer gallery entices one to the volume beyond. Although the materials are gorgeous, they are well-chosen and not over done.”
