This environmentally-conscious renovation creates a balanced system through its forms, materials, and new technologies. Simple and austere, it evokes the farm vernacular.

With deference to the original character, thoughtful spatial reorganization of the interior and the site recreates internal and external order. The pool, pavilion, and garden complex establish a clever linear aleé focus.

This large house on a narrow lot is skillfully and elegantly handled in scale, organization, and plan. It has nice exterior details and whimsical roof forms. The garden looks like a pleasant place to be.

Miller Residence Renovation

Leonardtown, MD
Chuck and Luann Miller, Owners
David Jameson Architect

This dynamic renovation, retaining the existing zoned envelope, exemplifies a very creative process and solution. The nicely-proportioned façade language refers to local traditions without replicating them. The contrast of painted and natural, unfinished materials supports the organizational concept. Lofty, well-proportioned spaces are achieved.

Removing the partitions creates a reductive, straightforward, minimal renovation. This small place is made very efficient by reducing the amount of circulation space. The most striking element is the new bathroom/kitchen core inserted into the form – it refers to the front bay without being literal.

The earthbound bearing structure, rooted in the steeply sloping site, contrasts with the cantilevered floor planes and the tent quality of the roof. It refers to structures found in the woods, like post and beam buildings. The change from density in the entry to transparency at the view is exciting, as is the balance between solid and glazed areas.
