Committees: Residential Design Awards

19th ANNUAL BALTIMORE Magazine/AIABALTIMORE 2002 Residential Design Award Winners and Jury Comments

Armstrong Residence
Potomac, Maryland
John and Linda Armstrong
McInturff Architects

“The bridge and half cylinder of this vernacular architecture help the building take advantage of its steep, wooded site. The off-center composition is excellent. Light is used nicely throughout, especially in the rear façade. There is a nice mix of colors and detailing everywhere on the exterior and interior. The glass countertop which overlooks the dining and living area is well thought out.”

Tasker Residence
Rappahannock County, Virginia
Constance and Joseph Tasker
McInturff Architects

“The roof lines and edges are reminiscent of farm houses and barns throughout the region. The large, expansive deck is a good use of the site. The open interior brings in much light. The use of color and simple, inexpensive materials, wood and concrete block, is well-done.”

Weiner Residence
Washington, D.C.
David Weiner

“This modest project is an admirable attempt to create a totally new environment while combining the small, existing houses. The fine use of detail and inexpensive materials is well thought out.”

HONORABLE MENTION

Chance Point
McDaniel, Maryland
John and Pat Wilson
John Thompson Architect

“This is an excellent transformation of a very modest rambler to a much nicer house. The southeast addition with the pergola and deck has especially nice detailing. Changing the front roof line with the addition of the upper story is a good simple move.”

Chance Point

Fairfax Residence
Annapolis, Maryland
Studio 3 Architects

“This is an example of a very traditional house done well. The scale and detailing are good, and the proportion of openings fits well within the scheme. This shows how, with special thought, inside and out, a traditional house can be something extraordinary.”

Private Residence
Baltimore, Maryland
Patrick Sutton Associates

“This building is a good response to its setting. The windows create lanterns which function well within the landscape. The well-organized, open plan with defined spaces has a very good flow. The interior finishes are used well.”
