BETHANY BEACH HOUSE
Bethany Beach, Delaware
Alexander Design Studio--Architect
“This excellent diagram differentiates the front from the back while the entry creates a strong sense of anticipation and adventure. The sequence throughout the house is wonderful! Allowing serendipitous and interesting spots, the design is not overly rational or slavish to the plan. Starting with a strong and compelling idea, the detailing and materials contribute consistent support.”

BORSECNIK WEIL WEEKEND HOUSE
Katherine Borsecnik and Gene Weil, Owners
Bozman, Maryland
McInturff Architects
“Opening up the center, this addition expresses one large room and creates an elegant plan. Although much of the original form was maintained, this is an amazing transformation of a generic 1950s modern ranch house. Regulatory constraint to the original foundation helped the project. The pool and structure extend into and relate well to the landscape. Nice touches throughout!”

ISLAND HOUSE
Jo Ricks and Jeff Clark
St. George Island, Maryland
Good/Architecture
“With small additions and reclading the main house, the cottage style interpretation creates an excellent, albeit modest, transformation. The architects did just enough and truly proved ‘less is more.’ The design solves the project brief with a simple solution which is open, yet protective from sun and rain. The details and the building’s new connection to place are wonderful.”

JONES RESIDENCE
Richard Jones
Washington, DC
McInturff Architects
“The combination of three small 1960s apartments with a 90 degree re-orientation changes the parallel spaces into one long dividable space. The simple plan is articulated by color and enhanced by the three-dimensional geometry throughout. The detailing is exquisite.”

OWNER’S APARTMENT
Baltimore, Maryland
David H. Gleason Associates, Inc.
“The addition of the atrium was a brilliant decision. Incredibly resourceful, the architect made the most of the existing building and its materials. The design uses every opportunity to do something interesting, turning the typical rowhouse organization upside down, giving to the living space the top floor with its views and daylight. This building is not only nice to live in, but its rear façade adds elegance and enlivens its context.”

RAPPAHANNOCK BEND
King George, Virginia
McInturff Architects
“Understanding the existing house very well, the architect’s response is harmonious with the plan. Consistent in materials, details, and in its three-dimensionality, it’s still clear what’s new. The addition is well-integrated with the building and its site. The screened porch is surrounded by the landscape and terrace. Creating a regional vernacular sense of southern living, the louvers form a lower and upper zone, allowing much light but no obnoxious glare.”

RESIDENCE
Alexandria, Virginia
McInturff Architects
“This elegant addition has a well-resolved plan which is very rich. Each decision was correct. With every look, one finds more wonderful discoveries. The fine craftsmanship is beautifully-detailed. Adding to the exterior space, the addition becomes the focal point of the small garden.”
