AIABaltimore Receives National Public Affairs Award In March at Grassroots: The AIA Annual Leadership and Legislative Conference in Washington, DC, AIABaltimore received the 2002 Component Excellence Award for Overall Program Public Affairs and Communications “for a thoughtfully conceived and well-executed public outreach and communications program that builds strategic alliances and increases awareness of the need for good design.” Since Alan Reed AIA founded the Communications Committee in 1995, AIABaltimore public and media outreach have increased significantly. Through his leadership and that of current chair Jim Determan AIA, local AIA architects and architecture have received radio and television coverage, and considerable print media attention. For years, we have had regular columns in The Urbanite and Chesapeake Home and Garden. Want to write about something? Both our Design Awards and Residential Design Awards Programs are featured annually in BALTIMORE magazine. Due to diligence in meeting occasionally with editors and submitting pieces, coverage in the Baltimore SUN goes beyond architectural criticism to reporting in the business, real estate, and lifestyle sections, as well as editorial pages. The activity of our Urban Design and Spring Lecture Series Committees also contributes to our efforts to keep architecture and architects in the public eye. Want to learn more about promoting what architects do? Join the Communications Committee by contacting jdeterman@csdarch.com. Norman Koonce FAIA, Executive Vice President/Chief Executive Officer, AIA; Karen Lewand, Executive Director; Jim Determan AIA, Secretary; Alan Reed AIA, Past-President; and Gordon Chong FAIA, President, AIA.
