Student Loan Debt "Forgiveness?"
Although there are some programs that enable architecture graduates, among others, to receive loan relief in exchange for pro bono work, there are not specific federal programs for architects the way they are for other professions. That is why last April, AIA and AIAS launched a campaign to amend federal law to extend to architecture grads the same kinds of programs that other professions receive. You can read more about the effort here.

GREEN APPLE SERVICE DAY
Saturday, September 29 marked the first annual Green Apple Day of Service, a community service effort organized by USGBC and The Center for Green Schools. Volunteers in over 40 countries helped to improve more than 1,200 communities and schools worldwide. The AIABaltimore Emerging Professionals Committee, led by Mandy Palasik, Assoc. AIA, hosted an event at Arlington Elementary and Middle School in the Park Heights Neighborhood. The event was well-attended, with over 40 students and 14 volunteers.
Interns, architecture students, and landscape architects gathered for a design charrette in the beginning of September to brainstorm ways to improve the unoccupied exterior landscape of the school through sustainable design tactics. The favored design, by Noel Rupprecht, Assoc.AIA, consisted of angular planters and benches constructed of CMUs that played off the existing geometry of the site’s circulation. Amanda Martinez, Assoc.AIA, served as the fundraising coordinator. She, along with volunteers, worked diligently to collect several sponsors for the project.
All concrete block, adhesive, and gravel was generously donated and delivered by Belair Road Supply. The students will soon be painting the block to add their school spirit to the landscape. Drought-tolerant and native plant species were carefully selected specific to the project and were planted within the concrete block cells as well as around the school’s sign. Newspaper was used as a weed barrier in the planters. Reclaimed pavers were used as an accent piece to reinforce the geometry of the planters. Overstock quarry tile was donated for the top of the benches. The students not only learned about construction in helping to build the pieces, but also learned about native species and the importance of using recycled materials.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to our incredible sponsors who made our project possible: Belair Road Supply & Randy Keck, Ammon Heisler Sachs Architects, David & Dad’s Café, USG, Architectural Ceramics, Herring Run Nursery, The Loading Dock, and the Masciocchi Family.
Last, but certainly not least, our amazing and dedicated volunteers who worked so hard to put together this year’s Green Apple Day of Service:
